U. K Bangla Cement Limited (UKBCL), a joint venture initiative of City Group and foreign investors, was incorporated on 3 November 2021. City Group is largest consumer products provider in Bangladesh. To expand its business horizon and to contribute to the national development, City Group has taken a significant step to establish one of the largest cement manufacturing plants in Bangladesh.
UKBCL will be established within Hoshendi Economic Zone, a private economic zone established by City Group located at Hoshendi, Gazaria, Munshiganj, in the riverbanks of Meghna. To address the market need, the company set a target of producing 5.6 million MT of cement per year. 80% of the production will be for the local market while the remaining 20% will be for export.
As the energy consumption of cement plant is very high, preference is given to energy-efficient vertical roller mill (VRM) from Germany. With VRM technology, the company will produce hydraulic cement, non-hydraulic cement, blast furnace cement and Portland fly ash cement in addition to original Portland cement.
The financing will be used for implementation of the cement manufacturing plant using VRM technology. The plant is equipped with two (2) VRM units each having a production capacity of 8,000 MT per day. The daily production capacity will be 16,000 MT, with an annual production capacity of 5.6 million MT. There will be six (6) cement silos with each having 15 MT storage capacity and five (5) automatic packing lines with each having a capacity of 180 t/h.
To address the environmental and social impacts during construction and operational period activities of the cement manufacturing plant and to protect and conserve the environment from any adverse impacts, UKBCL will follow the applicable rules and regulations set forth in the Environmental Conservation Rules (ECR) 2023 of Bangladesh as well as the Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) of The World Bank (WB).
